Recognizing White Privilege: Were You No Angel?

Similar to the “We Are Not Trayvon Martin” Tumblr blog that was created last year, some people who are white are responding with “MichaelBrown’s crime“.

Contributors to the site display a sheet listing crimes they have committed when they were 18, the age of Michael Brown at the time of his death (people who are black have been killed for much less) that didn’t result in their murder, character assassination, incarceration, beating, etc the way it often plays out for people of color.

“Some of us stole from convenience stores, some of us experimented with drugs and alcohol, and some of us got punished more than others. The truth is that the consequences we face–or don’t face–depend on the color of our skin, where we live and how much money we have.

This is unjust. And we’re sick of it. “

I'm a Social Justice Educator and Aspiring Humanitarian who is interested in conflict resolution, improving intergroup relations, and building more equitable and inclusive communities. "Notes from an Aspiring Humanitarian" is my blog, where I write about issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice. By exploring social identities through written word, film & video, and other forms of media, I hope to continue to expand and enrich conversations about social issues that face our society, and to find ways to take social action while encouraging others to do so as well in their own ways.
